“If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people” (Confucius)
The greatest teachers in the world who contribute to our learning, knowledge and careers are parents, guardians, role models, formal education, informal education and experience. Learning is fundamental to our being, career and life. Where would you be without your great teachers? Who has been your greatest teacher? .
“The foundation of every state is the education of its youth” (Diogenes)
“We inherited a beautiful planet from our ancestors, now it is time to leave it in the best shape possible for the generations to come” (Utsah Shrestha)
Research asserts a child’s character is formed by the age of five. All the vicarious learning observed becomes a large part of the individual’s intellect and who they eventually become. James Baldwin said, “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them”. Likewise, most learn from role-models who are excellent examples of how to behave, bad or good.
“You can nourish the development of your child’s imagination by providing nourishing images from stories the child hears and limiting images the child receives from television, computer games, videos, and movies” (Rahima Baldwin Dancy)
“Whenever I feel sad or a little fragile, I invoke their presence (the ancestors) for support, and they never fail to be there” (Thich Nhat Hanh)
A Hausa proverb reads “Lack of knowledge is darker than night”. However, through asking the right questions, building a purposeful career, reading, teaching, carrying out the best research and applying knowledge many issues get a solution. Furthermore, related to careers, nobody is a charity case, many are intelligent with the capacity to work or trade to improve situations. You are a product of descendants of Great Ancestors, parents and guardians. Therefore, contribute valuable human, economic, and honourable teachings to dependants and generations. Maya Angelou said if you learn teach and at best we are all teachers.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Nelson Mandela)
Formal education involves theoretical learning, knowing and intellectual development within the four walls (or formal online) of institutions. Formal education is a great way to get ahead in life. It improves the knowledge, networks, career opportunity or income especially for those with little or no networks. There are certain sectors of the modern economy that require a certificate or degree to operate, and be hired as the best brains. However, educational attainment is only one factor not the sole determinant of success in life. Your level of educational attainment and what you do with your certificate (s) is an individual decision.
"Any system of education which does not help a man to have a healthy and sound body and alert brain, and balanced and disciplined instinctive urges, is both misconceived and dangerous”
(Obafemi Awolowo)
“A book is not just a piece of paper but a transformation tool. Books are an investment in knowledge, the type of knowledge that builds wealth”
“When you have mastered numbers, you will in fact no longer be reading numbers, any more than you read words when reading books, you will be reading meanings” (W. E. B. Du Bois)
Informal education involves training, self and life education which extends into trade/entrepreneurship and work experience. These improve the intellect, leadership skill and builds competency from the practical application of knowledge, opportunity recognition and development, having people skills, grinding and the grit or ‘learning by doing’. Entrepreneurs call this “street education”. Informal education is about converting formal education or knowledge into practical experience.
“Education which does not tend to develop the individual is not education at all"
(Dr E.D.Z Beeka)
Additionally, it is often said experience is the best teacher, but aim to also learn from others because some experiences are costly. The only way to perform to high standards or get great work done is to build competent experience. Formal education/knowledge requires relevant practical application to be considered valuable. When experience is built and sustained intrapreneurially or entrepreneurially you become a better version of yourself with each passage of time.
“The Macintosh team was what is commonly known as intrapreneurship… a group of people going, in essence, back to the garage, but in a large company” (Steve Jobs)
“Education comes from within, you get it by struggle, and effort and thought” (Napoleon Hill)
Therefore, both parental, formal and informal education are the greatest mediums to change the world. Education extends beyond formal education within the confines of a school or well-known institution. A core of education involves usable/applicable knowledge. For example, regardless of level of education many people understand that personal, property and other investments are valuable. Thus, application is imperative and such knowledge becomes power when converted into feasible practice.
“Formal education gets you a living and wages, while self-education and profits will get you wealth and a fortune” (Jim Rohn)
