YOU CAN DO ANYTHING

YOU CAN DO ALMOST ANYTHING

Entrepreneurship is a viable career option and a legitimate way to earn a living to create the life you want. The fundamentals to a successful entrepreneurship career and business involves mastering the “can do” mentality of the entrepreneur, additional to learning technical trade day to day operational strategies, that is, internal and external competencies. Every existing entrepreneur will tell you that your individual decision and ‘the power of one’ is what matters in life and you can create the circumstances you desire. An entrepreneur said, “I was once afraid of people saying, ‘what does she think she is?’ Now I have the courage to stand and say ‘This is who I am’.  Yogi Bhajan captures the human capacity saying “You are powerful provided you know how powerful you are”.

One song can spark a moment
One flower can wake the dream
One tree can start a forest
One bird can herald spring
One smile begins a friendship
One handclasp lifts a soul
One star can guide a ship at sea
One word can form the goal

One vote can change a nation
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes out the darkness
One laugh will conquer the gloom

One step must start each journey
One word must start each prayer
One hope will raise our spirits
One touch can show you care

One voice can speak with wisdom
One heart can know what’s true
One touch can show you care
One life can make the difference
You see, it’s up to YOU!

Yes, I can. Yes, I must.

Ursula Burns said, “As I've progressed in my career, I've come to appreciate-and really value-the other attributes that define a company's success beyond the P&L:  great leadership, long-term financial strength, ethical business practices, evolving business strategies, sound governance, powerful brands, values-based decision-making”.

Therefore, boldly claim your entrepreneurship identity. Fear has no space in your life, feel the fear but go out and achieve anyway. Start and operate a business formally or informally to earn your entrepreneurship identity. Work through the challenges and know that there will always be light at the end of the tunnel. Besides, no one jumps out of the train when it is in the dark tunnel or throws away their ticket. They ride it out, and you will ride out your personal and business challenges, through the ups and downs. You must not give up or your success will stop. You have to try, try, sometimes change direction and try again consistently, and as long as you don’t give up you will remain an entrepreneur for life. Randy Johnson advices that you “Work hard. And have patience. Because no matter who you are, you're going to get hurt in your career and you have to be patient to get through the injuries”. Background knowledge, time, information, learning, strategy, good negotiation abilities, decisions and action heals.

Know that in life the people who get what they want in life are not afraid to go for it. Hence, life is generally not all inclusive, many do not get what they deserve rather they get what they negotiate. Sheryl Sandberg the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook said, “When my mother took her turn to sit in a gown at her graduation, she thought she only had two career options: nursing and teaching. She raised me and my sister to believe that we could do anything, and we believed her”. Therefore, don’t look at an industry, sector or career and think it is too good for you or you don’t have a chance. You do, and you will get what you want as long as you plan your career and business, have extensive usable knowledge to negotiate better and make quality critical decisions. If you can do anything mentally (entrepreneurial cognition) you can do it physically (technical skills). What you believe in will eventually become your reality because the universe will make it happen through your intense focus, drive, grit, fearlessness and smart work.

Furthermore, entrepreneurs make the economic system run. Entrepreneurs create their own employment directly, jobs for their staff directly and pay taxes toward contributing to the public sector coffers all of which directly and indirectly advances economies. Hence, entrepreneurs as private sector operators need the support of the public sector to advance favourable business laws and an enabling environment for business. However, regardless of policy support entrepreneurs move on, thinking on their feet, they learn how to gather, own and control the factors of production in any environment.  Steve Jobs said as an entrepreneur be confident in your decision to be different:
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do”.
“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed” (Booker T. Washington)

“I've come to realise your career is all about the choices you make. Every single one matters” (Demi Lovato)

Success is the good fortune that comes from aspiration, desperation, perspiration and inspiration” (Evan Esar)
